ACA Marketplaces & ICHRA

Premium Spikes Incoming

What is happening?
Big price jumps are coming to ACA health insurance plans. According to new data updated in early August 2026, ACA Marketplace insurers are asking for a median premium increase of 15% for 2027. This marks the second year in a row of double-digit premium hikes, following an 18% to 20% jump proposed for 2026.

Why are prices skyrocketing? Insurers blame the rising cost of health care, labor shortages, inflation, and the high cost of specialty drugs (like GLP-1 weight-loss medications). Another massive reason is that enhanced premium tax credits are expected to expire at the end of 2025.

What it means for your book of business:
Your clients will feel the pinch. If the tax subsidies expire, out-of-pocket costs could jump by more than 75% for some enrollees. You must be ready to shop the market for your clients. This is also a perfect time to talk to your business clients about Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRA). As standard ACA premiums rise, businesses might look to ICHRAs as a way to control their health benefit costs while still helping employees get covered.

P&C & UPO Benefits

Growth and New Infrastructure Risks

What is happening?
In the Property & Casualty (P&C) world, there is both strong growth and emerging risk. On August 12, 2026, American Integrity Insurance Group reported that their gross premiums written grew by 14% to $326.6 million in the second quarter of 2026. However, a new report released by Allianz on August 11, 2026, highlights a massive new challenge: data centers. The boom in data center construction is creating major infrastructure risks because almost 80% of the world's new data center capacity is located in areas with high natural disaster (nat cat) risks. The global data center insurance market is expected to double in value to $24 billion by 2030.

What it means for your book of business:
If you handle commercial P&C insurance, data centers represent a huge new market for growth. But you must deeply understand natural disaster risks to properly advise commercial clients. For agents offering UPO (Universal Producer Options) benefits, offering reliable supplemental policies is the best way to help clients manage these growing infrastructure risks.

Medicare & Hospital Payments

The 2027 Rule

What is happening?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) officially published the final rule for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) on August 4, 2026. This rule updates how Medicare pays hospitals for inpatient services. Because of these changes, CMS will increase payments to hospitals by about $2.1 billion in 2027. The rule also includes extra payments for new medical technologies, which brings the total estimated increase up to $2.9 billion.

What it means for your book of business:
As hospital payments increase, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans may adjust their networks or out-of-pocket costs to balance the budget. You need to keep an eye on these changes so you can answer your clients' questions during the next enrollment period and help them find the most cost-effective plans.

AI in the Insurance Industry

Working Smarter

Artificial Intelligence is officially taking over the boring parts of insurance! On August 11, 2026, Appian and Synechron launched the "Open Underwriting Stack," an AI-powered system built to automate the entire underwriting lifecycle. The very next day, August 12, 2026, an insurtech company named bolt launched the industry's first AI-powered insurance distribution platform. This new platform brings together customer data, workflows, and market access into one smart system to stop manual data entry and connect distribution partners.

The innovation does not stop there. UPPO Benefits is making waves by utilizing AI in their platform to simplify employee health coverage and seamlessly manage ICHRA models for employers of any size. Furthermore, the upcoming ACA Way Conference is powered by HiTheo, an advanced AI that acts as a dedicated "Context OS". Theo provides the memory and governance layer that turns standard chatbots into truly intelligent workers capable of securely handling heavy operations.

Finally, NHP University (NHPU) is proud to announce that we will be using the OpenCharts AI platform for our operations! OpenCharts is a unified AI-powered workspace that consolidates flowcharts, whiteboards, notes, and presentations into one cohesive platform. By integrating Theo AI across all these surfaces, it allows our team to rapidly generate projects, visualize complex workflows, and deploy live AI agents directly from flowcharts.
